In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees . . . .
Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.
Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.
As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?
This book was a lot better than I expected it to be! I put it off for a little while, so the book was just looking pretty on my shelf, but I'm so glad that I picked it up now!
Unearthly is the first book by Cynthia Hand and I think she did a great job! The book is really well written and had me hooked within a couple of pages. I really liked the characters, especially Tucker - even though he is pretty annoying in some parts! I loved how he was described, I could just see him in my mind and feel what he felt. Clara was a great character as well. It was nice to follow her around and to experience everything from her point of view.
I wasn't really into angel books, I have to admit.. And this was only my second (?) angel title, but it's getting me hooked thanks to great titles like this! I loved the plot. It wasn't mushy or sugar coated, and I really liked what the author did with working out the story lines.
Unearthly is the the thrilling first book in the Unearthly series and forms a great base for the rest of the series to lean on. It's well written, with a great love story and a well described journey for Clara to work towards her purpose. I'm hooked!
My overall rating:
Four stars! Because Clara's story gave me wings.
I loved Unearthly! Great to see you liked it too, nice review :D
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Unearthly. I can not decide between Christian or Tucker but I think Tucker may slightly be in the lead. Great review. Donna :)
ReplyDeleteThanks! :)
ReplyDeleteYeah I'm Team Tucker here - but I'm sure she'll end up with Christian. I have a hunch that he has something to do with her purpose - I think it's much deeper than the story implied. But we'll see ;)
